What is HSK?
HSK is the official exam for assessing the Chinese language abilities of non-native learners. The HSK test assesses students' ability to read, write and understand Mandarin and is traditionally split into 6 levels, HSK1 being the easiest and HSK6 being something close to fluency.
The HSKK exam is a separate but similar test assessing one's ability to speak Chinese. Audio recording devices are used and answers are assessed by examiners before giving a final score. You can find out more about the HSK and HSKK exams below.
How Many HSK Levels are there?
HSK has been split into 6 levels since its development but many people complained that the levels didn't correspond with those for other languages and that HSK6 wasn't hard enough, with many learners conquering the HSK6 exam only to find out they were nowhere near fluent and still had much to learn.
To counter this, the HSK has very recently been split into 9 levels, with 3 additional harder levels being added. While this may sound like a negative the implications aren't all bad! Find out all you need to know below.
How Can I Improve my HSK Level?
Improving your HSK level is the name of the game for most Chinese students. It's a great qualification for your CV and an excellent way to track your progress over time. The best way to improve is by learning with a qualified teacher and immersing yourself in the language.
However, you will also need to self-study and may wish to sit past papers or read about how other people have studied for the test. To help you do this we've built a resource hub dedicated specifically to all things HSK. Explore below!
