"I have (almost) completed Cantonese Beginner Level 1, and I am so so happy with my decision to choose to learn with LingoClass.

I really didn't think I'd learn as much as I've been able to with these classes! Each lesson is fun, productive, and not only am I learning the language, I'm also learning the culture as well.

Thank you to LingoClass, my classmates, and especially our teacher Zoe for making the classes fun and easy to learn with! I can't wait for Level 2!!!!!"

What are the benefits of learning Cantonese Chinese with us?

Why LinoClass?

While Mandarin has gained global attention, Cantonese is equally important. It is the voice of Hong Kong and southern China, carrying a rich culture and identity. Learning Cantonese opens doors to authentic connections and a deeper understanding of Hong Kong life.

At LingoClass, we use a communicative approach, helping you speak with confidence from your very first lesson. Whether in group courses or private tuition, you’ll practice real conversations that matter.

Hong Kong Skyline

Hong Kong and Britain

Hong Kong and the UK have a rich historical relationship, meaning immigrants from both sides are regularly found in the other country. There are long standing business and family ties that bring our two cultures closer together and help us learn from one another.

Since the main language spoken in Hong Kong is Cantonese, learning how to speak and read in Cantonese can be incredibly useful for anyone wishing to visit or relocate for work. Even a basic knowledge of the language can really help to show your interest and set you apart.

The UK's Chinese Community

It is because of this long standing relationship that the majority of the Chinese community in the UK is made up of Hong Kong Chinese, most of whom speak Cantonese as their first language. If you visit a restaurant or bakery in Chinatown for example, the people serving you are most likely Cantonese speakers.

For this reason, many students who want to learn and practice speaking Chinese in the UK choose to learn Cantonese rather than Mandarin as they will have far more opportunity to do so.

Mandarin and Cantonese

Mandarin and Cantonese are essential languages to know to fully understand Chinese culture. Both are tonal, but Cantonese has six tones while Mandarin only has four. In addition, Cantonese is based on traditional Chinese characters while Mandarin speakers often learn simplified characters (although many can read both).

Furthermore, when you learn the traditional radicals (the part of a Chinese character that often denotes meaning), it will be easier for you to understand the simplified radicals in Mandarin, enhancing your overall language ability, similar to an English speaker learning Latin.

Kung-Fu Movies

Do you love kung-fu movies and Chinese cinema? If so, Cantonese may just be the language for you. In the 70s and 80s, Hong Kong cinema boomed and gave us some of the best loved Chinese movie stars we still see on our screens today. Jackie Chan for example, has made more than 150 films in the martial arts genre, most of which are filmed in Cantonese.

If you want to be able to follow the subtitles and truly understand kung-fu films then Cantonese is probably the most useful language you can learn.
